Pre-Surgical Coordinator - Varied Day

POSITION SUMMARY: The Surgical Coordinator is a Registered Nurse (“RN”) who is responsible for the coordination of pre- and post-surgical care of patients receiving surgical procedures. Prepares and analyzes clinical data and collaborates with other medical personnel in preparation of patients for surgery

QUALIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS

Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing

Experience: Minimum 3 Years of PACU/OR/CCU experience required, Same Day Surgery/Outpatient Surgery Experience preferred

Certifications/Licensure: RN licensure; CPR, PALS and ACLS certification required

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Physical and Mental Demands/Requirements (subject to modification or accommodation as required):
• Requires ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to fifty (50) pounds frequently; occasionally lift, carry, push, and/or pull over a hundred (100) pounds
• Requires full range of body motion, manual finger dexterity, and hand/eye coordination
• Work is primarily standing and/or walking 90% of the time; sedentary with prolonged sitting on a hard or cushioned chair 10% of the time
• Demonstrates near visual acuity with color perception in order to decipher fine print
• Demonstrates auditory acuity sufficient to hear phone conversations, overhead pages, and alarms
• Must be able to reach above the shoulder, must be able to bend, squat and sit, stand, stoop, crouching, reaching, kneeling
• Demonstrates the ability to work under pressure or stress
• Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form using the English language
• Demonstrates the ability to establish priorities and prioritize tasks in order to meet deadlines
• Demonstrates the ability and technical skills to work with computers, advanced software, and other office equipment

Working Environment:
• Primarily within the facility of FCMC in a well-illuminated, climate-controlled, indoor office environment with average noise level
• This position may be exposed to communicable diseases; may be required to wear respirator or other PPE as necessary for protection
• Scheduling hours - hours will primarily be Monday-Friday 6:00am-4:30pm but flexibility is required as work demands fluctuate
• May work at an offsite location and/or be required to travel to other facilities to attend meetings and training

Reporting Structure: Reports to Nurse Manager, Surgical Services. In his/her absence, reports to Chief Nursing Officer

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES AND STANDARDS

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to):
1. Coordinates pre-surgical care and pre-anesthesia testing for patients prior to surgical procedure
2. Assembles SDS charts for different surgical services (i.e. general surgery, endoscopies, cataract, etc) by ensuring all relevant paperwork is present and complete
3. Ensures tests and/or other pre-surgical diagnostic testing is ordered, as needed, or follows up with referring providers to obtain
4. Assesses completeness of pre-anesthesia/nursing patient questionnaire and assessment
5. Communicates special needs of the patient to the OR room and anesthesia staff
6. Interprets results of labs, diagnostic studies, EKGs, and other pre-surgical testing and notifies appropriate personnel of abnormal results
7. Collaborates with anesthesia personnel to assess patient for the need of additional testing before, during or after procedure
8. Assists with preparing the operating room schedule; notifies staff and providers of schedule changes
9. Orders supplies and ensures Same Day Surgery area is stocked and functional for patient care
10. Notifies Imaging department of surgeries requiring their services (i.e. fluro)
11. Oversees the education of patients and family members/care givers regarding all aspects of surgical care
12. Prepares patients for surgery and/or surgical discharge; oversees patient flow throughout surgical stay
13. Functions as a staff RN in PACU when needed to provide coverage
14. Provides oversight of department operations and staff in the absence of the Operating Room manager
